Week 13: Goals this Week

By the end of this week you will be able to:
  • Print a high quality proof using the Epson printers available in the Graphics Lab (see Output page)
  • Cut, mount and label your proof for professional presentation
The assigned activities for this week are designed to help you practice these learning goals and demonstrate your learning. Doing these activities in the order presented below is recommended. However, you are ultimately responsible for your own learning, and you may proceed in any way that helps you acquire the above knowledge and skills.

Completion checklist for Week 13

This is a face-to-face week. This week's class meeting is a production lab. Your instructor will give printing, cutting and mounting demonstrations throughout the class period and provide guidance and help. Students will complete this week's work in class or during open lab time (see lab schedule posted by the door of the Graphics Lab).
  • Print high quality proofs of both sides of your postcard from InDesign (see Output page)
  • Trim your proofs, mount on cardstock, and professionally label for presentation

Cut, Mount and Label Your Proofs

Complete during class on December 2
Your instructor will demonstrate cutting and mounting 2-3 times during class as needed. There are three self-healing cutting surfaces in the classroom production work area, so three students can be cutting while others are mounting. Keep production moving along smoothly by cleaning your work area as you go.
Supplies you will need for cutting, mounting and labeling your postcard proofs:
  • Black Cardstock (You will need 2-3 sheets, 8x10 or letter size, available at most art/craft supply shops.)
  • Adhesive. (I recommend rubber cement or double-sided tape.)
  • Printed label for your proof (should contain your full name, class, section number, project title, project notes, and any necessary image credits) - note you can print this on plain paper, trim it, and adhere to the back of your mounted proofs
Other supplies you need are provided in the Graphic Lab, so you don't need to buy them. But so you know what they are, they include:
  • Xacto knife and blade
  • Self-healing cutting surface
  • Metal-edged ruler
How to turn in for credit: Bring your printed, mounted proof to the final class meeting on December 16 for evaluation.

Week 14: Goals this Week

By the end of this week you will be able to:
  • Present your work professionally, in terms of both your verbal presentation and physical display of your printed proofs
  • Provide useful critical feedback for your peers and instructor
The assigned activities for this week are designed to help you practice these learning goals and demonstrate your learning. Doing these activities in the order presented below is recommended. However, you are ultimately responsible for your own learning, and you may proceed in any way that helps you acquire the above knowledge and skills.

Completion checklist for Week 14

  • Display your mounted proofs. - In-Class
  • Review mounted proofs and fill out a Peer Grade Sheet for several classmates. - In-Class
  • Verbally present your work. - In-Class
  • Participate in critique discussion for your work and your classmates' work. - In-Class

Prepare for Presentation

Complete before attending class on December 9
Read the Presentation handout and prepare your remarks for your verbal presentation. Contact your instructor well ahead of the class meeting time if you have questions or concerns.

Display Your Mounted Proofs

Complete at start of final class meeting.
There is no need to turn on your computer when you arrive in class. Take 3-4 Grade Sheets from instructor and write your name at the top. Stack these beneath your mounted proofs. Place your mounted proofs (with grade sheets underneath) on display on the work tables in the center of the classroom.

Peer Review

Complete during final class meeting.
Your instructor will review the procedures for the presentation and critique session and provide some additional instructions. Then each student will fill out a peer review sheet for several classmates. This will also be time to make notes for critique. Paper will be provided in class, but make sure you bring a pen or pencil.

Presentation and Critique Session

Complete during final class meeting.
Each student will take two to three minutes to present your mounted work in terms of its purpose, intended audience, design goals and results achieved. The class will respond for up to five minutes with verbal feedback (observations about the finished work). The next student will present and receive feedback, then the next, and so on, until everyone has presented and participated in critical dialog about each work.
Presentation and Critique aren't graded in detail. If you participate, you earn the points as follows:
  • Verbal presentation of your own project: 30 points
  • Verbal feedback provided during critique: 20 points
Anyone choosing to remain silent and not state an observation will not receive Critique points.

Presentation Handout

This handout provides information for your Presentation during Finals/Week 16. The first page summarizes the physical presentation expected for your postcard (mounting and labeling of your printed proofs), and the verbal presentation and critique process we will use in class. The second page is the Peer Grade Sheet you will fill out for 1-3 other students during our final meeting. You can enlarge to full screen or download the PDF (1MB) file.
