Week 13: Goals this Week

By the end of this week you will be able to:
  • Print a high quality proof using the Epson printers available in the Graphics Lab
  • Cut, mount and label your proof for professional presentation
The assigned activities for this week are designed to help you practice these learning goals and demonstrate your learning. Doing these activities in the order presented below is recommended. However, you are ultimately responsible for your own learning, and you may proceed in any way that helps you acquire the above knowledge and skills.

Completion checklist for Week 13

This is a face-to-face week. This week's class meeting is a production lab. Your instructor will give printing, cutting and mounting demonstrations throughout the class period and provide guidance and help. Students will complete this week's work in class or during open lab time (see lab schedule posted by the door of the Graphics Lab).
  • Print high quality proofs of both sides of your postcard from InDesign
  • Trim your proofs, mount on cardstock, and professionally label for presentation

Print Your Proof from InDesign

Complete during class on December 2 - You must be in class for the print appointment time you signed up for during class last week.
This video demonstrates how to print your proof from InDesign using the Epson printers in the Graphics Lab. Viewing time needed: 7 minutes.

If you have problems with playback you can right-click and download the m4v movie file here.
Summary of the process:
  1. Log into one of the Graphics Lab printing workstations, turn on the printer and load your paper (printers are labeled with the paper type you can use; choose your printer based on your paper type)
  2. Open your postcard.indd file from your Packaged folder
  3. Use the InDesign Print dialog to select correct printer, select paper size, set page orientation, choose number of copies to print, center your proof on the page, and turn on crop marks
  4. Open Printer dialog and use Printer Settings to select media (paper) type and set print resolution quality
Supplies you will need for printing your postcard proofs:
  • Epson InkJet Printing Paper (You will need at least 4 sheets, letter size. You can buy a glossy or matte variety so long as it is Epson brand.)
How to turn in for credit: Bring your printed, mounted proof to the final class meeting on December 9 for evaluation.

Cut, Mount and Label Your Proofs

Complete during class on December 2
Your instructor will demonstrate cutting and mounting 2-3 times during class as needed. There are three self-healing cutting surfaces in the classroom production work area, so three students can be cutting while others are mounting. Keep production moving along smoothly by cleaning your work area as you go.
Supplies you will need for cutting, mounting and labeling your postcard proofs:
  • Black Cardstock (You will need 2-3 sheets, 8x10 or letter size, available at most art/craft supply shops.)
  • Adhesive. (I recommend rubber cement or double-sided tape.)
  • Printed label for your proof (should contain your full name, class, section number, project title, project notes, and any necessary image credits) - note you can print this on plain paper, trim it, and adhere to the back of your mounted proofs
Other supplies you need are provided in the Graphic Lab, so you don't need to buy them. But so you know what they are, they include:
  • Xacto knife and blade
  • Self-healing cutting surface
  • Metal-edged ruler
How to turn in for credit: Bring your printed, mounted proof to the final class meeting on December 9 for evaluation.
